Ryozen Taiko (drum) Festival is held annually in August in Ryozen-cho, Date City, Fukushima Pref. Ryozen-cho located at the western foot of Mt. Ryozen is a leafy town with a history, and Mt. Ryozen as a symbol of the town shows successive beauties of the year. In this town of Ryozen, more than 60 sets of Japanese drums called “Ryozen Taiko” are preserved. The performance of Ryozen Taiko started in the Kanbun era (1655-1672) of the Edo period. Since then it has developed independently mainly in Fukushima and Date area for 350 years. At Ryozen Taiko Festival, 30 sets of drums (more than 100 in number) are placed together and over 700 local drummers display their skills. The 100 drums beaten simultaneously have a tremendous impact and overwhelm the audience.
