猊鼻渓 Geibi-kei Geibikei Gorge
|
Geibikei Gorge is a place of scenic beauty located in Higashiyama-cho, Ichinoseki City, Iwate Pref. It is counted as one of Japan’s 100 Scenic Places and nationally designated as a Place of Scenic Beauty. In 1910, when a memorial service for Tozan Ashi, a Confucian from this town in the Edo period, was held, people who loved their hometown gathered together and named this gorge Geibikei. Geibikei is a 2 km gorge created by the Satetsu River having eroded the limestone cliff. A shallow river runs gently through the sheer 100 m cliffs. The Masculine cliffs and gentle flow of the river create harsh but beautiful scenery.
Enjoying the round trip tour in a flat-bottomed boat, you can hear the boatmen singing “Geibi Oiwake,” which touches the travelers’ heart. Each season has its own beauty here; wisteria in spring, tender green in summer and autumnal foliage in fall. Especially, in winter, you can enjoy “Kinagashi-nabe (Japanese hot stew)” in a boat while viewing snowy landscape.
