みたらい渓谷 Mitarai-keikoku Mitarai Gorge

Jp En

The area, where the Tennokawa River and the Yamakami River, which flows out of Mt. Omine-san in Tenkawa Village in the southern part of Nara Pref. flow together, is called Mitarai Gorge. Visitors can enjoy beautiful scenery along the gorge in each season of the year. The name “Mitarai (washing body)” originates in the legend that an emperor of the Nancho (the South Dynasty existed from 1336 to 1392) purified his body in the stream. The stream water is still clear and cold. There is a promenade along the gorge. Walking up the trail, visitors can enjoy the view of the Mitarai Waterfall and the Hikari Waterfall. Fresh greenery in spring and crimson foliage in fall are the best scenic beauty in Kinki Region. In summer, wild azaleas bloom all around the stream. It takes about two and a half hours to walk through the promenade. The gorge is visited by hikers all through the year.
