Jp En

The Great Camphor Tree of Kamo is located in Miyoshi-cho, Miyoshi County,  Tokushima Prefecture. This giant tree, dating back  more than one thousand years, iboasts an overwhelming size and grandeur. The tree stands rooted alone in the middle of a ricefield with nothing to block its view. 25 meters high, and with a trunk circumference of 20 meters, it spreads 12 stout branches in all directions from 3 meters above the ground andspreading more than 50 meters across. Due to its magnificence it was designated  a Natural National Monument  in 1926, and was promoted to a Special Natural National Monument  in 1956. The figure in which the tree grows is said to be the most graceful in Japan. There was a time when its vigor dwindled due to lightning strikes and pesticides, but following efforts by the prefecture and town to buy the surrounding land and change the soil aroundit, the tree has reclaimed its grandeur. “The Great Camphor Tree Park” has been built around it, and it has become a place  for children to play, as well as for elderly people to seek solace. The Great Camphor Tree of Kamo continues to be loved by many people as the “symbol and pride of the town”.
