Mt. Unabetsudake (1419.4 m) is a basalitic-andesitic stratovolcano in the towns of Shari, Rausu and Shibetsu at the base of Shiretoko Peninsula in Hokkaido. The word “Unabetsu” derives from an Ainu word “una-pet,” meaning “ash river.” Although the mountain is located at the southern end of the Shiretoko mountain range, which continues to Cape Shiretoko, the ridgeline descends about the half of the altitude just before this mountain and makes it look like an independent peak.

The ridges of Mt. Unabetsudake are relatively gentle for its high altitude. Its gentle and feminine appearance gives good contrast to the ragged and masculine appearance of adjacent Mt. Sharidake. Any climbing route is available for beginners. From winter through spring, a lot of climbers come to enjoy mountain skiing.
