桂浜 Katsurahama Katsurahama Beach

Jp En

Katsurahama is a beach located in the southern part of Kochi City. It is an arch-shaped beach between Kami-Ryuzuzaki cape in the northeast and Shimo-Ryuzuzaki cape in the southwest. On the beach stands a famous statue of Sakamoto Ryoma, the local hero who played an important role in realizing the Meiji Restoration. It looks as if Ryoma is gazing far away beyond the Pacific Ocean.

As is sung in the local folk song Yosakoi-bushi, the beach has been a famous moon-viewing spot since the old times. In a gentle breeze from the ocean with warm Japan Current, you will experience a fantastic moment on a night with a full moon. On the day of the harvest moon every year, the Moon Festival is held on the beach, where local food and sake are offered in memory of Omachi Keigetsu, a home-grown poet of the Meiji and Taisho periods.
