Jp En

Urakawa Shrine is located in Urakawa Town on the south coast of Hokkaido. Enshrined deities are Ukemochi no Kami, Omononushi no Mikoto and Ichikishimahime no Mikoto. The shrine was founded in 1669, when a general of the stationing forces of the Matsumae domain transferred a deity from Konpiragu Shrine in Sanuki province (present-day Kagawa Prefecture) and built a small shrine in the place near the present shrine office.

In 1801, another deity was transferred from Inari Daimyojin in Yamashiro province (present-day southern part of Kyoto Prefecture) and another small shrine was built in the same place to pray for navigation safety and a bumper catch. In 1807, The stationing forces of the Nanbu domain transferred a deity from Itsukushima Shrine in Aki province (present-day Hiroshima Prefecture) and built a third small shrine. The three small shrines were integrated into Inari Shrine and the shrine building with a stone roof was constructed in 1842. The shrine was renamed Urakawa Shrine in 1931.

On January 2nd every year, “Kiba Sanpai (Visiting Shrine on Horseback)” is held, in which twelve to fifteen horses are ridden up the 101 steep steps to the shrine in hope for the successful breeding of horses in the year to come. It is a famous new year’s event held in “the hometown of thoroughbreds.”
