雄冬岬 Ofuyu-misaki Cape Ofuyu
|
Cape Ofuyu is a scenic spot located in Ofuyu Coast along National Route 231 in Hamamasu-ku, Ishikari City, Hokkaido. It is counted as one of the three most unexplored capes in Hokkaido. The name “Ofuyu” derives from the word “ufui,” which means “burning” in the Ainu language. It was named so because the steep cliff in the sunset looks as if it is burning red.
In fact, Cape Ofuyu had long been an isolated land before National Route 231 was opened to traffic in 1981. Boats were the only means of transportation available.
The observatory atop the 40 m steep cliff commands the magnificent view of continuing cliffs and the Sea of Japan. The islands of Teuri and Yakishiri can be seen on a fine day. The primeval beauty of the desolate coastline and wild waves of the Sea of Japan is very impressive.
