Lake Miike is a crater lake in the Kirishima Mountain Range in Takahara-cho, Nishi-Morokata-gun, Miyazaki Pref. It is the largest and deepest (103 m) of all the crater lakes in Kirishima mountains. It is a round lake with a circumference of 4 km and a diameter of 1 km. There is a camping site on the lakeside, which is suitable for family camping and school excursion. The area of 115 ha around Lake Miike and Lake Koike is appointed as “Wild Birds’ Forest,” which is famous as a bird watching site where about 130 species of wild birds including the rare species of fairy pitta and blue-and-white flycatcher can be seen. The promenade leading to Wild Bird’s Forest and Lake Koike is arranged as a part of Kyushu Nature Trail project. Visitors can enjoy forest bathing, hiking and fishing in the grandeur of nature.
