船宿寺 Sensyuku-ji Senshuku Temple

Jp En

Senshuku Temple belongs to the Mt Koya Shingon sect, and is located in Gose, Nara Prefecture. The name of the mountain on which it lies is Iozen. The temple is counted as one of the 25 Kansai Hananodera temples.

The priest Gyogi established Senshuku Temple in 724. Following a prophecy in an old man's dream, the local people made a hermitage on a gigantic rock to worship Bhaisajyaguru. The name of the temple comes from this legend, while Iozen, the name of the mountain, means to 'relieve Bhaisajyaguru'.

Senshuku Temple is famous for its beautiful flowers throughout the four seasons, when you can see cherry blossom, hydrangea, azalea and camellia. One garden features over 1000 hydrangea, and Mt Katsuragi can be seen from here. In the Annual Buddhist Sermon that takes place on 3rd May each year, many people come to visit the shrine.
