Sano Shrine located in Takaharu-cho, Nishimorokata-gun, Miyazaki Pref. is a shrine with a long history, which originates in the mythological age. The enshrined deity is Kamuyamato Iwarehiko no Sumera no Mikoto (Emperor Jinmu; given name: Sano no Mikoto, the mythical founder and the first emperor of Japan). The shrine is one of Kirishima Six Gongen Shrines. It is said that the shrine was founded at the birthplace of Emperor Jinmu ( Ojibaru in Takaharu-cho) during the reign of Emperor Kosho (475-393 B.C.). As the shrine building had been destroyed in the fire due to the eruption of Mt. Kirishima several times from 700-1,000 A.D., it was transferred to the present place in 1610. As it enshrines Emperor Jinmu, it was attached to Miyazaki Jingu Shrine in the Meiji period (1868-1912), but became independent after World War II. Walking along the front approach lined with 400-year-old Jpanese cedar trees, visitors will feel refreshed and purified.
