天衝舞浮立 Tenshomai-furyu Tensho-dance Furyu

Jp En

You can still see Furyu dancing in the five districts of Ichikawa, Sugiyama, Kamahara, Furuyu and Suda, in the town of Fuji in Saga Prefecture. Of all of them, the Tensho-dance Furyu in Ichikawa has been designated an important intangible folk cultural heritage of Saga Prefecture.  Its features are the crown in the shape of the sun and moon, and the gentle, discreet motions of the dancers wearing   the ‘Tensho’ on their heads.
Tensho-dance Furyu is a ritual to thank the god for a rich harvest, to celebrate it and to wish for peace. It is held on a day of equinox every year.  The celebrations feature lively flute and drum performances,  a brave cudgel performance, and the humorous Yakko-dance, as well as an impromptu comedy sketch. The Tensho-dance then takes place followed by the ‘Michiyuki song’ which closes the ritual.
Tensho-dance Furyu was designated as an important intangible folk cultural heritage of the town of Fuji.
