能面 泥眼 Noumen Deigan Noh Mask Deigan
|
The Deigan mask was originally created to represent the spirit of a god in the play “Ama (The diver),” but later came to be used for a ghost as well. It is called “Dei-gan,” which means “the eyes painted with natural pigments” because its eyes are painted in gold. The gold-painted eyes or teeth symbolize the supernatural being.
In the play “Aoi no Ue,” it is used for the living spirit of the jealous Lady Rokujo, who is torn between her jealousy and self-control. Her loose hair on both sides of the face, a slightly opened mouth, and sorrowful eyes exquisitely express a noble lady seeking salvation from her own grudging. The Deigan mask has an air of unearthly fear and nobility.
