八戸焼 Hachinohe-yaki Hachinohe Ware

Jp En

Hachinohe Ware is traditional pottery that used to be made at kilns in the mountain of Kanizawa in Hachinohe City, Aomori Pref. until the end of Edo period (the late 19th century). Hachinohe Ware was very popular as pottery for commoners. However, it had fallen into disuse with the times and in the Showa period all the kilns were deserted. At present the tradition is carried on at Shozan Kiln, which was opened by Shozan Watanabe in 1975. Shozan, who was born as a potter’s son in Sado Island, Niigata Pref., happened to know the existence of Hachinohe Ware. He had been fascinated and devoted himself to studying it until finally he opened Hachinohe Ware kiln “Watanabe Pottery Workshop” and, through trial and error, redeveloped this traditional pottery in his own way. Now his son Masaki Watanabe continues to carry on the tradition. Hachinohe Ware was designated a prefectural Traditional Craft Product.
