吉野水分神社 Yoshino-mikumari-jinjya Yoshino Mikumari Shrine

Jp En

Yoshino Mikumari Shrine is located in Yoshinoyama, Yoshino-cho, Nara Pref. It enshrines Ama no Mikumari no Okami, who controls distribution of water and has power to bring safe childbirth and good child care. The shrine is so old as to have been enlisted on Engishiki (codes and procedures on national rites and prayers) in the middle of the Heian period (794-1192) and one of the oldest Mikumari shrines in Yamato province (present-day Nara Pref.) “Mikumari (water distribution)” was later corrupted into “Mikomori (baby-sitter)” and the shrine is endearingly called “Komori-san” by the local people. The main hall is said to have been rebuilt by Toyotomi Hideyori, for his father, Toyotomi Hideyoshi, offered a prayer to the deity at this shrine and was blessed with a son. Inside the main gate, Honden (the main hall), Heiden (the votive offerings hall), Haiden (oratory) and the corridors are laid out in a quadrangular arrangement. Honden is consisted of three buildings linked with each other, which is a very unusual architectural style.
