Nakagusuku was a castle located in Kita Nakagusuku-son, Nakagami-gun, Okinawa Pref. It is a designated National Historic Site, and was named a World Heritage Site, along with other Okinawa’s castles.
It is said that the castle was built by Gosamaru, a renowned commander of Ryukyu government, who was placed to this castle to check Amawari, the powerful lord in the east. After Gosamaru and Amawari died, it was resided by Prince Nakagusuku, and then in 1609, when the Satsuma domain occupied Okinawa, it was used as a guard station.
The castle is distinctive in its construction techniques. Composed of six compounds, the whole castle area is surrounded with beautiful curvilinear stone walls in accordance with natural land features. The site is known for its beautiful view and now it is being arranged into Nakagusuku Castle Ruin Park along the themes of nature, history and culture.
