こけ庭 Koke-niwa Moss Garden

Jp En

Japanese garden has always been cohabiting with nature in harmony, creating its own unique world view.  Although there are many types of mosses, any garden that is mostly covered with moss on the ground can be called a moss garden.  The most famous example is the garden of Saiho-ji, also known as Koke-dera (moss temple). There are various kinds of moss commonly found in a moss garden, including Sugigoke (Hair-cap moss),  Haigoke (Plume moss),  Hinokigoke, Hosobarashigagoke and Kotsubogoke. Moss absorbs water not only from the soil, but also from the moisture in air. Thus, moss likes to live in shady and highly humid areas. It is therefore not surprising that most moss gardens are located in shades with high humidity. This, in turn, reflects Wabi-Sabi - a kind of aesthetic view with appreciation of things that are imperfect, temporary and incomplete.
